Brookville Reservoir Survey 1991-1992

Part of: US Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District VCP

This collection is referred to as "Brookville Reservoir Survey 1991-1992.” This name is consistent throughout the finding aid, the file folders, and the box labels. The extent of this collection is one and a quarter (1.25) linear inches.

The documents for this collection were acquired from human remains analysis boxes associated with the Brookville Reservoir Survey 1991-992 artifact investigation. The collection consisted solely of analysis records for Glidewell Mound (12FR24) with no oversized or photographic materials present. Five adult sex and age recording forms and a human remains inventory were included. The human remains inventory was labeled “1991-92 Brookville Grant” and organized by catalog number, bone identification, unit, level, and artifact count. The count totaled 184 remains. The adult age and sex recording forms were dated and recorded by observer Jan Northam in April 2004 and included catalog numbers 92.11, 92.11.2.5, 92.11.3.1, 92.11.3.2, 92.11.4.1, and 92.11.5.19. Due to the large span of dates for these records, the inclusive dates of the collection range from 1991 to 2004. Overall, the condition of the records was good, although metal staples had to be removed.

The main issue in processing this project’s records was in locating a final report. After a review of the information from the Brookville Reservoir Survey 1991-1992 artifact collection, it was determined that other pertinent information regarding this investigation could be gleaned from Report of Investigation 35. Thus, Report of Investigation 35 can be viewed as the project’s final report. Specifically this decision was made based on the overlap of artifacts and sites present within the Brookville Reservoir Survey 1991-1992 artifact collection and the information present within Report of Investigation 35. This was also bolstered by the overlap of catalog information between the report and the human remains inventory and analysis records. It should be noted that Appendix D of this report is prefaced with the label “information contained within this appendix is not for public disclosure” due to its content which describes the areas surveyed and site locations.

The 92.11 skeletal materials are documented in Report of Investigation 35’s section on Glidewell Mound and an analysis section described in Appendix A. Due to the fact that an association can be drawn between the cataloged materials and those materials documented in the report, it is possible to glean background information that relates to this project. In terms of the human remains, four burials were donated to Ball State University by a private collector in 1992. These remains were recovered prior to U.S. Army Corps of Engineer ownership of Brookville Reservoir. One burial was recovered in 1992 during this project, a Section 3 inadvertent discovery, which overlaps with U.S. Army Corps of Engineer ownership of the property (Kolbe 1992).

The digital materials in this collection were processed by the Veterans Curation Program (VCP), and include the artifact database, select artifact photographs, artifact report, finding aid, project report, and scanned asset key. Additional digital materials held by the VCP include additional artifact images, artifact recording forms, the document folder listing, the human remains context list, initial data sheet, and labels. For additional information on these materials, refer to the Finding Aid.
