Historic Properties Treatment of Nine Sites within the Anthem at Merrill Ranch Development, Florence, Pinal County, Arizona

Author(s): Samuel Duwe; Lynn A. Neal

Year: 2008

Summary

Given the relatively uniform nature of the seven identified resource processing sites in the Anthem at Merrill Ranch project area, as well as, Site AZ U:15:237(ASM) with its agricultural features, the research focus of the data recovery plan was to gain a better basic understanding of the temporal affiliations of and subsistence strategies represented by the project area’s eight prehistoric sites. An additional goal was to place these sites within the greater context of Hohokam occupation along the Gila River. Site AZ U:15:335(ASM), the SPRR Coolidge to Florence Spur, was assessed archivally to better understand its contribution to the theme of historic railroading in Arizona.

The presence of roasting features at the resource processing sites indicated the potential for recovery of botanical, faunal, and radiocarbon materials. The ability to assign time of use and particular subsistence items to these sites was expected to allow EnviroSystems archaeologists to contribute to the supporting body of knowledge related to land use on the fringe of the habitation areas along the Gila River during specific time periods. A strategy of instrument mapping, surface collection and in-field analysis, limited mechanical and hand excavations, and laboratory analysis of artifacts and samples was employed to recover data to address these research issues.
