Archaeological Evaluation of 27 Sites on Red Rio Bombing Range, White Sands Missile Range, Socorro County, New Mexico

Part of the Holloman Air Force Base Resources project

Year: 2012

Summary

Damage assessments and National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) evaluations at 27 sites on White Sands Missile Range (WSMR), in Socorro County, New Mexico. To fully evaluate the NRHP eligibility of the sites, each location was inspected and all cultural manifestations were documented in detail during the current project. Particular attention was paid to gathering data regarding any military impacts (i.e., bomb craters) the sites had incurred since a damage assessment conducted by Human Systems Research, Inc. in 1994 (Webb 1995). In addition, environmental factors such as vegetative cover, microtopographic and geomorphic contexts, and evidence of disturbance were collected to aid in assessing site integrity. Information was collected on site features and artifact assemblages to provide for temporal assignment (if possible) and refinement of site boundaries.
