The Area II survey conducted by SWCA resulted in the documentation of 50 archaeological sites and 78 isolated finds. Sixteen of the archaeological sites were newly discovered, and of the 44 previously documented sites, 33 were found and reinvestigated. This artifact, probably a hafted knife, was discovered at the Hell Gap site on November 2, 1994, by George Zeimens while on a field trip with a group of third and fourth grade students from Lingle Elementary School. The tool was found on a talus pile in front of an animal burrow. We used X-Ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy to identify nine obsidian sources used by the prehistoric inhabitants of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. This paper examines this prehistoric use of obsidian and obsidian sources. Variation in utilization patterns is suggested through study of temporally diagnostic obsidian artifacts. The diachronic pattern of sources used allows consideration of the influences in acquisition, distribution, and use of obsidian.

Exactitude in understanding or deciphering these ancient religious/artistic endeavors is not available, however, a general understanding and expanded appreciation can be obtained. Renewed excavation at the Hathaway site revealed that there were no fewer than five temporal components at the mortuary locus of the site. Previous excavators, Warren Moorehead in 1912 and Wendell Hadlock and Theodore Stern in 1947 led those investigators to conclude that there was only a single component. Two of the components at Hathaway are assignable to the Late Archaic period, and parallel similar components at the Cow Point site in New Brunswick.
