This paper provides an overview of the results of archaeological and paleoecological research at the Gast Farm and Gast Spring alluvial fans along the western side of the Mississippi River Valley, in southeastern Iowa. The Gast Farm project was an interdisciplinary investigation of the archaeological and paleoecological deposits from two alluvial fans along the western edge of the Mississippi River valley in southeastern Iowa. Controlled surface collections and limited excavations were conducted from 1990-1994. This paper discusses preliminary faunal data from the early Late Woodland (Weaver Focus) component at the Gast Farm site. Organic preservation was good in general at the Gast Farm site but the Weaver locus contained the largest faunal sample. More than 35,000 Weaver faunal remains were recovered, primarily from pit features and sheet midden deposits.
