This article attempts an interpretation of an unusual assemblage of cattle skulls recovered from recent excavations at the Viking Age monumental hall of Hofstaðir in Iceland. The site of Miðbær on the island of Flatey in Breiðafjörður, NW Iceland was test excavated in 1989 by Thomas Amorosi and Thomas McGovern, producing a column sample from a deeply stratified midden deposit. The initial faunal analysis conducted by Amorosi and McGovern revealed a dominant maritime component with high concentrations of bird, fish, and sea mammal bones. This paper both summarizes this unpublished analysis and adds a more detailed examination of the bird and fish remains.
