This project consists of articles written by members of Santa Fe Institute’s cosmology research group. Overall, the goal of this group is to understand the larger relationships between cosmology and society through a theoretically open-ended, comparative examination of the ancient American Southwest, Southeast, and Mesoamerica.

The Mesoamerican Radiocarbon (MesoRAD) database compiles radiocarbon dates and isotopic data from archaeological sites in across Mesoamerica. The initial dataset from MesoRAD is a compilation of 14C dates from the Maya lowlands. We will be expanding the database to other parts of Mesoamerica soon. Lacanjá Tzeltal is a Classic Period Maya site located in Ocosingo, Chiapas, Mexico. A cache containing artifacts was recovered beneath a large limestone altar, situated in the center of a ballcourt (Andrew Scherer, personal communication, November 29, 2019). One chert spear point and two obsidian blades from the cache were submitted for protein residue (CIEP) analysis to determine if the tools were used on plants or animals prior to being deposited in the cache.
