Rock-walled archaeological features are notoriously hard to date, largely because of the absence of organic material for radiocarbon dating. This study demonstrates the efficacy of dating clam garden walls using optical dating, and uses optical ages to determine how sedimentation rates in the intertidal zone are affected by their construction. Clam gardens are rock-walled, intertidal terraces that were constructed and maintained by coastal First Nation peoples to increase bivalve habitat and...

Centering Alluitsoq: The Potential for an Indigenous Archaeology in Greenland (2018)
Postcolonial and Indigenous archaeologies have changed the theoretical, methodological, and political landscapes of our discipline’s engagement with regions and peoples once conceptualized as peripheral to the European core. However, some regions, and the subjects that move within them, still occupy the conceptual margins. This paper considers the position of archaeological praxes in Greenland, a constituent of the Kingdom of Denmark, and the late arrival of the postcolonial critique to...

Centralized Households and Decentralized Communities: Economic Integration in a Marpole Period Plankhouse Village (2017)
The Marpole Period (2500 to 1000 BP) was a time of social transformation in the Salish Sea region of the Northwest Coast of North America. During this period, social and economic relations became increasingly bound up in the operation of centralized, long-lived, multifamily households. Yet, centralization arguably failed to extend far past plankhouse walls, producing regionally decentralized economic communities. This paper examines the processes underlying this pattern from the vantage point of...

Cetacean Hunting on the northern Oregon Coast: Evidence from the Par-Tee Site (35CLT20) (2017)
Indigenous whale hunting on the Pacific Northwest Coast is predominately associated with whaling cultures north of Oregon in northern Washington and British Columbia’s Vancouver Island. Ethnographic and ethno-historical records from the northern Oregon Coast suggests whaling occurred locally, at least opportunistically. To date the only physical evidence of local whaling is a humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) phalanx with an embedded elk (Cervus elaphus) bone harpoon point. A calibrated...

The Challenges and Benefits of Comparing Archaeological and Oral Records (2017)
Archaeologists have referenced the oral record throughout the history of their research in Tsimshian territory. In this paper we frame our recent collaboration against this legacy and argue that that a symmetrical relationship is a necessary foundation for any conjunction between these complex datasets. Our collaboration recognizes the common history they represent, but also their different logical frameworks and empirical scope. In our context, the oral record was more complete, detailed, and...

Changing Ecologies and Altered Landscapes: A 13,500 year Paleoecological Record from Galiano Island, British Columbia (2017)
A high-resolution lake sediment core recovered from Shaw’s Bog on Galiano Island provides a window into the paleoecology of the island and region back to the Late Pleistocene. The extensive time depth represented offers an opportunity to evaluate ecology and climate prior to the known arrival of people in the southern Gulf Islands. It also provides a mechanism to measure impacts on the local ecology following the establishment of major, long-term village locations such as Dionisio Point and...

CHARCOAL IDENTIFICATION AND AMS RADIOCARBON AGE DETERMINATION OF SAMPLES FROM SPOON LAKE 3 (YAK-076) AND KNIGHT ISLAND NORTH POINT (YAK-205), YAKUTAT COUNTY, ALASKA (2016)
Sites YAK-076 (Spoon Lake 3) and YAK-205 (Knight Island North Point) lie in Yakutat Bay, southeastern Alaska. Both sites consist of house pits with hearths and associated storage caches. Recovered artifacts indicate fishing, hunting, meat and hide processing. The Spoon Lake 3 site probably was occupied as soon as AD 1275, while the settlement at the Knight Island North Point site followed shortly after glacier retreat (AD 1500) from the island (Aron Crowell, personal communication November 21,...
