There are only a very few Archaic period sites in the Charlotte Harbor/Pine Island Sound region of southwest Florida. One of these, composing a large portion of Calusa Island, is an oyster-shell dominated midden. This site is located on the north bank of the Potomac River, one mile east of Upper Cedar Point, and two miles east of the mouth of Nanjemoy Creek. It runs along the coast for half a mile and extends inland for as much as 35 feet, though it usually is confined to a variable 10-20 foot wide strip. The shoreline in this locale apparently has stabilized such that the former wave cut cliff line has been revegetated.

Using detailed comparisons of the archaeological assemblages from 18 early sites in the Chesapeake, this project explores the material conditions of culture contact, plantation development and organization, the rise of slavery, and consumer behavior. Comparable artifact databases have been created for the 18 sites, and analysis of artifact distributions has provided great insight into differences and similarities.
