Forts Amador and Grant were constructed to guard the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal, which reverted to the Republic of Panama at the end of 1999, concluding a unique period in both countries' histories. Due to the arid environment and subsequent excellent preservation on the north coast of Peru, evidence obtained from macrobotanical remains here has been the primary sources of information on plant use.
