Zooarchaeology and the Siege of Fort Stanwix: Reconstructing an American Revolution Landscape (2018)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Charlene A. Keck. Amy Fedchenko.

Recently, National Park Service archeologists at Fort Stanwix National Monument, Rome, N.Y., excavated a previously undisturbed feature after an inadvertent discovery was unearthed during trenching to connect city water to a new fire suppression system at the reconstructed fort. Data recovery and laboratory analysis of artifacts confirmed the feature dated to the siege of Fort Stanwix by British forces during August 1777. Observations of taphonomic signatures present on faunal remains indicate...

Zooarchaeology of Historic Fort Snelling (21HE99) and the Native Ecology of Bdote (2018)
DOCUMENT Citation Only David Mather.

Animal remains from Fort Snelling in Minnesota provide detailed information about the native ecology of the Twin Cities metropolitan area before it was irrevocably changed by urbanization. This paper presents a case study of the Officers’ Latrine feature, with dated deposits ranging from 1824 to 1865. The assemblage is incredibly well preserved, and includes a significant variety of wild bird remains. These and other animal species reveal aspects of the original upland prairie, floodplain forest...

Specifically, this project is examining the faunal deposits from LA 20,000, the largest Spanish estancia in early colonial New Mexico (1598-1680). The meat-component of the diet from a 17th century Spanish...

The Zuni Heaven project is a proposed land selection for Apache County, Arizona. Nearly 5,900 acres will be available for transfer to the County. In three phases, between October 1985 and July 1987, BLM inventoried over 7,100 acres to locate sufficient acreage for transfer. During the surveys, 32 sites were recorded in 19 different parcels. A total of 5,977 acres have been recommended for transfer to Apache County, excluding parcels which contain National Register potential properties.

Zuni Perspectives on Historic Preservation (2019)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Michael Spears. Kurt Dongoske. Maren Hopkins. T. J. Ferguson.

This is an abstract from the "Braiding Knowledge: Opportunities and Challenges for Collaborative Approaches to Archaeological Heritage and Conservation" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The federal historic preservation program of the United States is built on a framework that privileges Western epistemologies of time and space and perceives historic properties as inanimate and valuable for their scientific potential. The concept of historic...
