This is an abstract from the "The Palace of Xalla in Teotihuacan: A Possible Seat of Power in the Ancient Metropolis" session, at the 86th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology.

This is an abstract from the "SAA 2019: General Sessions" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Within Mesoamerica, most are restricted to elite contexts and centers with monumental architecture. In contrast, this presentation considers residential landscapes across social classes using settlement data and house mound...
Lead Isotopes as a Tool for Identifying Human Mobility in Central Mexico (2024)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2024: Individual Abstracts" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Lead isotopes have successfully been used in archaeology to trace artifact provenance and, more recently, to study human paleomobility through skeletal remains in regions with traditionally temperate climates, such as Europe. However, very few environmental lead isotope baseline studies have been conducted for the Americas, where anthropogenic lead...

This is an abstract from the "Central Mexico after Teotihuacan: Everyday Life and the (Re)Making of Epiclassic Communities" session, at the 86th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The Epiclassic period (550–850 CE) in central Mexico is widely viewed by archaeologists as a time of instability, violent conflict, and large-scale migration. The collapse of Teotihuacan left a fractious and decentralized sociopolitical landscape in its wake—a situation that contrasted starkly...
Lifeways at the Onset of Urbanization in Central Mexico: Initial Findings from Ceramic Analysis and Residential Excavations at Middle Formative Tlalancaleca, Puebla. (2024)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2024: Individual Abstracts" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Tlalancaleca is located in the western reaches of the Puebla-Tlaxcala Valley in Central Mexico and was one of the region's largest urban centers during its apogee in the Terminal Formative period (100 BC - AD 250). The pathway to this urban apogee is less well understood but a promising area of inquiry lies in the process of population aggregation that...
Lithic Economy of Epiclassic Los Mogotes (2018)
This study examines the flaked stone economy at the Epiclassic site of Los Mogotes, located north of the Basin of Mexico in central Mexico. We quantified obsidian and chert artifacts based on form and material in order to examine the nature of the lithic economy during this time. The findings suggest that the inhabitants of Los Mogotes were not primary producers of obsidian tools but were dependent on long-distance exchange for already manufactured goods. Despite being closer to high quality...

Long and short-term lacustrine and fluviolacustrine dynamics in relation to prehistoric settlements: The case of Lake Texcoco (2019)
This is an abstract from the "The Legacies of The Basin of Mexico: The Ecological Processes in the Evolution of a Civilization, Part 1" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Despite the existence of archaeological data from surface surveys and excavations, the extent and dynamics of the lake and its shores over time are poorly known. Archaeological works often refer to a model of distribution of the Basin of Mexico’s lakes that is to a large extent fixed...

Los Horcones and Teotihuacan: Agency, Art, and Interaction (2021)
This is an abstract from the "Teotihuacan: Multidisciplinary Research on Mesoamerica's Classic Metropolis" session, at the 86th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Artistic representations are often the most salient indices of interaction between Teotihuacan and other communities throughout Mesoamerica. Interpretation of this artistic evidence, however, is complicated and often quite contested in the archaeological literature. In this paper, we would like to explore...
Los Horcones, Offering 1: 3D Imaging, Analysis, and Reconstruction (2018)
The three dimensional imaging of artifacts discovered at the Los Horcones site in Southern Chiapas Mexico has enabled archaeologists to approach artifacts in a brand new way. With the use of a 3D scanner hardware and 3D program software, objects and features of various sizes are scanned to create a proportional and scale digital version. The scanning of artifacts allows for minimal handling of the objects decreasing the likelihood of wear, damage, deterioration, and contamination, effectively...
Los Horcones, Offering 1: The Archaeology of Music and Ritual on the Pacific Coast of Chiapas (2018)
Offering 1 from Los Horcones is an assemblage of figurine masks, whistles, rattles and vessels that offers an interesting opportunity for analysis that provides information of the auditory, olfactory, and visual experience of this small ritual. The offering, initially thought to be simply a collection of figurines and masks, were later discovered to be whistles—small musical instruments whose simplicity belies the importance of the meanings they encoded. Experimental archaeological analysis...

This is an abstract from the "SAA 2021: General Sessions" session, at the 86th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. This project entails creating machine learning models to predict the locations of caves and archaeological features using airborne Lidar (laser scanning) data. The goal of this work is to bridge the gap between machine learning pursued by computer scientists and the types of on-the-ground projects of interest to scientists who seek to improve management and...
Macro- and Microbotanical Results from Select Archaeological Contexts in the Plaza of the Columns Complex, Teotihuacan, Mexico (2018)
Paleoethnobotanical analyses provide significant information regarding past human behaviors, which include the selection, production, and consumption of plant resources, among others. This paper focuses on select archaeological contexts, domestic and ritual in nature, which have been investigated from a paleoethnobotanical perspective at the urban center of Teotihuacan, and more specifically in the area known as the Plaza of the Columns Complex. The recovery of macrobotanicals such as maize (Zea...
Making sense of a Holy Trinity: the Dioses Narigudos of Classic period Central Veracruz (2018)
Dioses Narigudos are a series of ceramic figurines that are extremely frequent during the Classic period in a very restricted area of South Central Veracruz. They occur generally in ritual deposits under floors of major and minor buildings, combining female and male representations of different hierarchy. Current interpretations relate them to a solar deity or a water deity, none of which identifications apply to all three main figurine types. Their attributes and the contexts in which they are...

Dependent on knowledge, skills, and social...

The results of pXRF analysis of obsidian artifacts from the surface and excavated materials from three single occupation sites are compared to pXRF studies of the larger centers of Tepeticpac and Cholula. This study...
