This is an abstract from the "SAA 2024: Individual Abstracts" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. However, its importance for understanding shifting patterns of exchange and resource acquisition within the Valley of Tehuacan has yet to be explored. This research draws upon the data gathered...

Preliminary Results from La Luna: A Late Classic Residential Group at El Zotz (2019)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2019: General Sessions" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. This paper will discuss the preliminary results of excavations at La Luna, a residential group outside of the El Zotz core. Initial investigations from this Late Classic complex yielded a large volume of high-quality polychrome sherds and prestige items that are inconsistent with the simple architecture of the group. The source of these materials and the...
Preliminary Results of Ancient Maya Marketplace Investigations at La Milpa, Belize (2024)
This is an abstract from the "Prehispanic Maya Marketplace Investigations in the Three Rivers Region of Belize: First Results" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. With support from a National Science Foundation Grant, fieldwork was conducted at the Ancient Maya site of La Milpa, located in the northwest corner of the Three Rivers Region. Archaeological matrix samples were collected from three areas within La Milpa for soil analysis as a method for...
Preliminary Results of Household Excavations at the Lithic Production Community of Took’ Witz at El Palmar, Mexico (2023)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2023: Individual Abstracts" session, at the 88th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. In this paper, we present new research on the lithic production community of Took’ Witz, a hinterland group near the ancient Maya polity of El Palmar in Campeche, Mexico. While previous research at Took’ Witz focused on large-scale utilitarian lithic production, recent investigations provide insight into people’s daily lives. Through excavations at three...
Preliminary Results of Petrographic and Chemical Analyses of Lapita Pottery Assemblage Excavated from Kurin Site, Mare Island, Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia (2019)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2019: General Sessions" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. In this paper, we will illustrate the number of possible pottery-making locations that we have identified so far from the Lapita pottery assemblage excavated at Kurin site, Mare Island, Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia. We first examined the non-plastic inclusions to determine whether minerals and rock fragments identified through a petrographic microscope may...

A Preliminary Study of Epiclassic Diet at Cerro Magoni in Tula, Mexico using Stable Isotope Analysis and AMS Radiocarbon Dating (2017)
In this paper, we present preliminary paleodietary data and radiocarbon dates for 12 burials recovered from Cerro Magoni, an Epiclassic (ca. AD 600-900) hilltop settlement in Tula, Mexico. Stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) analyses of bone collagen were used to assess the diet of individuals buried near the summit of the settlement. The production of bone collagen requires essential amino acids derived from protein, therefore stable carbon analyses reflect the origins of dietary protein,...
A Preliminary Study of Epiclassic Human Mobility at Cerro Magoni in Tula, Mexico Using Stable and Radiometric Isotope Analyses (2018)
In this poster, we present preliminary mobility data for ten individuals recovered from the summit of Cerro Magoni, an Epiclassic (ca. AD 600-900) hilltop settlement in Tula, Mexico. For decades it has been hypothesized that the Tula area may have experienced an influx of immigrants from northwestern Mexico during the Epiclassic period, and that these newcomers played an important role in the rise Tula Grande. Results presented here provide an important step forward towards testing the long-held...

A Preliminary Study on Food and the Emergence of Archaic States in the Hawaiian Islands (2023)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2023: Individual Abstracts" session, at the 88th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Archaeologists approach the topic of ancient foodways in two major ways: by focusing on ‘diet’ and adaptation to local environments, or more recently, by focusing on ‘cuisine,’ through culturally specific rules about how food is acquired, prepared, consumed, and discarded. Few, however, have attempted to consider how changes in diet and cuisine have...

Richard Steffy Ship Reconstruction Laboratory and the future of the archaeology of Shipbuilding" , at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. The shallow waters of the Chinchorro Bank Biosphere Reserve, off Yucatan Peninsula eastern shore (Caribbean Sea), host an everlasting testimonial of centuries of seafaring. Thus far, the Vice-directorate of Underwater Archaeology of the Mexican...
Preparing for Life on the Move: Lithic Platform Characteristics and Forager Mobility (2019)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2019: General Sessions" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Lithicists use various attributes of chipped stone tools to characterize hunter-gatherer technological organization, which is thought to be partly determined by mobility patterns of these groups; thus, lithic attributes serve as proxies for the amount and type of mobility practiced. In particular, lithic platform preparation has received attention as an...
Preparing for the Great War: How Lidar and GPR Helped Locate Military Training Resources (2024)
This is an abstract from the "Application of Geophysical Techniques to Military Archaeology" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. To date, no comprehensive study examining World War I training had been available for the Department of Defense (DoD). In 2017, the Alabama National Guard partnered with the Mississippi National Guard and Panamerican Consultants on a DoD Legacy Resources Management Program project (CR 18-834) to synthesize existing research...
The Presence of Maya Aquatic Imagery at Teotihuacan (2024)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2024: Individual Abstracts" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Previous studies have illustrated the continuing relationship between the Maya area and the Basin of Mexico, especially with the presence of Maya iconography at the site of Teotihuacan. Maya imagery can be seen in diverse cultural materials such as ceramics and stucco-painted murals. For example, researchers have argued that the stucco-painted murals at...
