Nan Madol, sometimes called the ‘Venice of the Pacific,’ is a mortuary and administrative site built from columnar basalt, boulders, and coral. The human skeletal material recovered from the Nan Medal islets in Ponape, Federated States of Micronesia, was excavated during the spring of 1984 by Drs. J. Stephen Athens and Joyce Bath.
