In 2006 a campaign of major archaeological excavations in Mývatnssveit, the area around Lake Mývatn in NE-Iceland, wound to a close with the completion of fieldwork at Hrísheimar and Sveigakot. Together with the excavation of Hofstaðir, which was completed in 2002, these formed the backbone of extensive archaeological fieldwork focused on the Lake Mývatn area which had begun in 1991, and which became subsequently known as the Landscapes of Settlements project. In addition to the three large...

NABO was founded over 20 years ago to attempt to cross-cut national and disciplinary boundaries and to help North Atlantic scholars make the most of the immense research potential of our damp and lovely research area. NABO has worked to aid in improving basic data comparability, in assisting practical fieldwork and interdisciplinary ventures, in promoting student training, and in better communicating our findings to other scholars, funding...
Paleoenvironment Chapter, Hofstadir Monograph (2006)
Chapter on the paleoenvironment for the Hofstadir Monograph. Until recently very little was known about the history of environmental change in Myvatnssveit, although many other parts of Iceland have been investigated in some detail, beginning with the work of Sigurður Þórarinsson in the 1940s and Þorleifur Einarsson in the 1950s. Notable multi-disciplinary research at the landscape scale, associated with archaeological excavation, has taken place and is still continuing in Reykholtsdalur in...

The site was very heavily eroded, with most of the surface reduced to prehistoric till and boulder surface. Scatters of bone in several areas resting...
Skútustaðir Midden Investigations Mývatn Northern Iceland 2009 (field report) (2010)
In June-July 2009 an international team (led by Ágústa Edwald FSÍ and Tom McGovern CUNY) conducted initial investigations of stratified midden deposits associated with the historic site of Skútustaðir in Mývatn in NE Iceland. In 2007 a joint FSÍ/CUNY NABO team visited Skútustaðir following the discovery of a patch of eroding midden by Arni Einarsson (Mývatn Research Station). Investigations in 2008 followed up on the 2007 results with a set of test trenches. The three 2008 test units (D,...
