Dun Ailinne and Its Meaning in the Context of Irish Identities (2019)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Susan Johnston.

This is an abstract from the "On the Periphery or the Leading Edge? Research in Prehistoric Ireland" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The notion that, historically, Ireland was a homogeneous society situated on the edge of Europe and passively receiving cultural influences has long been implicit in the larger context of European archaeology. And yet Irish society and culture were neither passive nor homogeneous at any point in the island’s history....

Dung Management in Medieval and Post-Medieval Brussels (Belgium) (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Luc Vrydaghs. Cristiano Nicosia. Yannick Devos. Alvise Vianello. Christine Pümpin.

During archaeological excavations in the center of Brussels (Belgium), often stratigraphic units containing dung – either omnivore-carnivore, including human, or herbivore – have been encountered. A multidisciplinary approach, comprising soil micromorphology, phytolith analysis and parasitology on soil thin sections, chemical analyses, including GC-MS and phosphorus measurements, was adopted to identify and characterize dung remains. In some cases dung was observed as part of the manure added to...

Dynamic models for reconstructing ancient coastal landscapes: the use of the MAXENT algorithm (2013)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Matteo Lorenzini. Pier Giorgio Spanu.

The availability of detailed environmental data has fueled a rapid increase in predictive modeling of archaeological landscapes and geographic distributions of archaeological evidence allowing the use of a variety of standard statistical techniques. In this paper we introduce the application of statistical and entropical methods in the geo-spatial analysis of the Sinis peninsula in the Gulf of Oristano, as investigated by the university of Sassari. The project was characterized by the use of...

A Dynamic Past: The Prehistoric Interactions on the Plain Project (2018)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Danielle Riebe. János Dani.

The collaborative, American-Hungarian Prehistoric Interactions on the Plain Project explores the past through the reconstruction of interactions. Investigations on interactions as an active mode of social investment and social construction challenges normative concepts of "culture" by modeling socio-cultural boundaries as a dynamic and negotiated process, as opposed to a static categorically assigned social unit. Moreover, our research contextualizes regional developments as the result of...

Dynamic Simulation of Large Herbivore Distribution during the Last Glacial Maximum: Implications for the Distribution of Human Populations (2019)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Samuel Seuru. Liliana Perez. Ariane Burke.

This is an abstract from the "Novel Statistical Techniques in Archaeology II (QUANTARCH II)" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. In this study we propose the use of agent-based modelling (ABM) and cellular automata (CA) to test the impact of predator-prey relationships on the distribution of prehistoric human populations. Our research goal is to establish a dynamic model of the distribution of large herbivores that constituted the main food source for...

DOCUMENT Full-Text Susan A. Johnston. Bernard Wailes.

Additional Figures and Plates from Dún Ailinne: Excavations at an Irish Royal Site, 1968-1975.

Dún Ailinne: Excavations at an Irish Royal Site, 1968-1975
PROJECT Uploaded by: Leigh Anne Ellison

The site of Dún Ailinne is one of four major ritual sites from the Irish Iron Age, each said to form the center of a political kingdom and thus described as "royal." Excavation has produced artifacts ranging from the Neolithic (about 5,000 years ago) through the later Iron Age (fourth century CE), when the site was the focus of repeated rituals, probably related to the creation and maintenance of political hegemony. A series of timber structures were built and replaced as each group of leaders...
