The looming question of housing the workforce: early workers' housing in the Derwent Valley (2017)
Often cited as the archetypical expression of industrial accommodation, textile workers’ housing has provided a lens through which the social effects of industrialisation have been examined. Such houses have often been interpreted as either exploitative hovels or wholesome patronly investments. Within this polarizing discourse, the lived experiences of occupants frequently remains divorced from analysis of form and function. Using a buildings-led approach, this paper investigates workers’...

The lost cargos of Torre Santa Sabina and east-west routes in the ancient Mediterranean (2013)
Torre Santa Sabina is a bay along the Apulian coast of Italy, near Brindisi (Roman Brundisium). 11,000 archaeological items, dating from the Bronze Age to Late Antiquity and the medieval period, have been recovered from the sea bottom since the first underwater investigations in the 1970s. Stratigraphical excavations have been carried out since 2007 by the University of Salento, with the aim of understanding the sequence of layers traditionally related to the so-called "harbor dump". These...
The Lost Dimension: Pruned Plants in Roman Gardens (2017)
This paper focuses on previously unnoticed evidence for the pruning and dwarfing of plants represented in Roman garden paintings, such as the well-known example from the Villa of Livia at Prima Porta. Dozens of other examples of detailed garden scenes are preserved at Pompeii and Herculaneum. Their trompe l'oeil effects created interior garden settings for both living and dining spaces, as well as to extended the perceived extent of actual gardens in exterior courtyards of shops, houses, and...

Lubyanka's Dissonant Voices: Conflicting Heritagescapes in the Heart of Moscow (2020)
This is a paper/report submission presented at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. Moscow’s former ‘Lubyanka’ prison building is now controlled by the FSB, the contemporary Russian successor to the Soviet KGB and NKVD. Yet this does not mean that this past is erased; on the contrary, the surrounding landscape has become a meaningful space for memorializing the victims of Soviet and contemporary repression. A boulder from the USSR’s first gulag camp is now a...
Luminescence dating of a Paleolithic site in the Aegean islands (2017)
Survey and ongoing excavations at the Stélida chert source and prehistoric stone tool quarry on the island of Naxos in the Aegean have yielded numerous lithic artifacts of Paleolithic and Mesolithic types. One implication is that the Greek islands may have been inhabited prior to the emergence of anatomically modern humans, a conclusion also drawn from a recently discovered site on Crete (Strasser et al JQS 2011). The Naxos site may be older, and its associated corpus of lithic material is...
Lunar House: The Archaeology of Contemporary Immigration. (2013)
The migration of people is no new phenomenon. It is, however, relatively recent that state and bureaucratic obstacles and controls have developed restrictions on the flow of migrants. State authorised immigration from former colonies and European Union member states is well documented. However, ‘illegal’ immigration, primarily that of those entering the country seeking asylum under the United Nations 1951 Refugee Convention, and the role and position of those immigrants in society, remains...

The Lure of the Sea: Objects and Behaviors (2021)
This is an abstract from the "The Iron Age of Northwest Portugal: Leftovers of Behavior" session, at the 86th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. It is generally accepted that Iron Age folk left the sodden lands in the valleys of large rivers and choose to settle on high ground, in locations with natural defenses, but very often near water sources. Agropastoral interests likely were part of the decision, but so were proximity to the mouth of major rivers and to the sea....
