Rennes-le-Château, history and myth in competition (2024)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2024: Individual Abstracts" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. In a small French village, discussions of medieval heretics and history have become combined by modern tourists. Popular literature has only added to the issue. Since the publication of pieces like Holy Blood, Holy Grail and the Da Vinci Code, the line between fact and fiction has grown thin. In 1965, excavations in Rennes-le-Château, the village which...

The repeated replacement model reexamined – Methodological considerations and dataset improvements (2017)
Five years ago a general explanation model was introduced regarding the observed dynamics during the Upper Paleolithic timeframe on the Iberian Peninsular. In doing so, a scenario of repeated replacements of human groups was established, reflected by fluctuations within the radiocarbon chronology and changes within the archaeological record. Incorporated into the "Adaptive Cycle Model", this model assumes a strong relationship between the constant changes of stadial-interstadial environmental...

Replicas of ancient organs from the Roman and Byzantine culture - a small summary of a large project (2013)
In 2011 and 2012, organs from Antiquity and the Middle Ages were reconstructed as part of a project between the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum in Mainz and the company Alexander Schuke Potsdam-organ-builder GmbH. The replica of a "Byzantine double-organ" was built, following historical images and written sources, as well as using information obtained from archaeological finds. This musical instrument was already shown at the exhibition "The Golden Byzantium and the Orient" in 2012 at the...
Replicating Plant Processing: Insights into Ancient Diets and Perishable Technologies (2024)
This is an abstract from the "Archaeogastronomy: Grocery Lists as Seen from a Multidimensional Perspective" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Investigating plant processing in the archaeological record is challenging due to the perishable nature of plant materials and their associated technologies, which are rarely preserved. We examine tools used for grinding and pounding, providing insights into the transformation of plant organs before their...

Report of Animal Bones from Selhagi, Mývatn District, Northern Iceland (2003)
In 2001 the FSĺ / NABO project Landscapes of Settlement in Northern Iceland collected animal bones from a stratified midden deposit associated with the abandoned site Selhagi on the property of the modern farm Haganes. Selhagi is located in the lushly vegetated lakeshore zone and its environmental setting presents a strong contrast with the eroded uplands to the S of the lake where the early sites at Sveigakot and Hrísheimur are under excavation. Close to both major migratory waterfowl nesting...
Report of Animal Bones from Tjarnargata 3C, Reykjavík, Iceland (2002)
During rescue excavations in downtown Reykjavík in 1999 nearly 100 kg of well-preserved animal bone was recovered in investigations at Tjarnargata 3 C by Fornleifastofnun Islands (FSÍ) directed by Mjöll Snaesdóttir. This bone collection (or archaeofauna) was largely sieved (4 mm and 1 mm mesh wet screen) and represents one of the largest archaeofauna recovered from Iceland to date. Analysis was carried out at City University of New York’s Northern Science & Education Center’s two zooarchaeology...
Report of Archaeofauna from Undir Sandmúla and Undir Bálabrekku, Bárðdælahreppur, N Iceland (2006)
Small archaeofauna from two highland sites located above 400 m above sea level, over 100 km inland in the upper reaches of the Skjálfandafljót river valley indicate the early presence of human settlement in this far inland area. While heavily deflated, the site of Undir Sandmúla produced an archaeofauna from stratified context directly above the Landnam sequence tephra, probably dating to the late 9th or early 10th century. This collection is from a highly burnt ”fireplace cleaning” deposit...
