This is an abstract from the "Crafting Archaeological Practice in Africa and Beyond: Celebrating the Contributions of Ann B. Stahl to Global Archaeology" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. How significant are newly established museums and archaeological projects in national parks to the future of Ghana's heritage education and community development? The inauguration of the Museum of Natural and Cultural Heritage at Shai Hills has revealed a promising...
Putting Southern African Rock Paintings in Context: The View from the Mirabib Rockshelter, Namibia (2017)
Various researchers have made great strides toward understanding southern African rock art through the exploration of the ethnographic and ethnohistoric records of San hunter-gatherer shamanism. In contrast, less attention has been paid to the archaeological context of the Later Stone Age (LSA) in which rock art was produced. This paper examines Middle Holocene rock paintings at the Mirabib rockshelter in the Central Namib Desert, western Namibia. Our fieldwork at Mirabib and our re-analysis of...

Quantifying Basalt Artifact Weathering and Depositional Context: Insights from the Koobi Fora Formation, Kenya (2018)
Stone artifact weathering is important for understanding the formational history of surface and in situ assemblages. While much of this work has focused on chert and other crypto-crystalline sillicas, the weathering of basalt is under-studied. As a large proportion of the Early Stone Age record consists of basalt, it is necessary to explore the weathering process of this material. Characterizing basalt weathering currently relies on the subjective characterization of both mechanical and chemical...
A Quantitative Analysis of the Association between Pottery Motifs and Communal Identity during the Third Millennium BCE at Abu Fatma, Sudan (2023)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2023: Individual Abstracts" session, at the 88th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Hinterland communities are important arenas for understanding community-level cultural and social development at the periphery of state power. In such communities where writing is not present, symbols become important vehicles for the transmission of identity information. Ceramic motif preference among individuals within these communities is one such mode...
Quantitatively and Qualitatively Evaluating the Impact that Palaeoanthropology Makes on the Lives of the Maasai People of Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania (2019)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2019: General Sessions" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Tanzania’s Oldupai Gorge is a flagship human origins research site, yet less recognised is that the lands surrounding Oldupai are home to the pastoralist Maasai society. Even though scientists have, for over a century, sought to illuminate the shared past of our species in what many regard to be a cradle of humankind, there has seldom been meaningful and...
Quaternary Paleoenvironmental Changes in the Inhambane Bay (Southeastern Mozambique) (2019)
This is an abstract from the "African Archaeology throughout the Holocene" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Contrasting with other areas of the globe, there are few palaeoenvironmental studies in Africa and in particularly in Mozambique. However, the knowledge about Quaternary palaeoenvironmental changes and their forcers (e.g. climate and sea level changes) is essential to understand the environmental context of human occupation of the Inhambane...
R Script for analysis of ceramic dataset (2015)
This document is the .txt version of an R script, used to run the analysis on the ceramic database also involved in this project.
Racism, Climate Change, and More-Than-Human Agency in Tropical West Africa (2023)
This is an abstract from the "Multispecies Frameworks in Archaeological Interpretation: Human-Nonhuman Interactions in the Past, Part II" session, at the 88th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. In this paper, I weave together archaeological and historical narratives about two plants in West Africa to explore the pitfalls and potentials of multispecies approaches. I argue that in West Africa, both individual plants and climate change have often been accorded more agentive...

Radiocarbon Dating of Land Snail Shell and the Chronology of MSA-Neolithic Human Activity in the Haua Fteah, Libya (2018)
Land snails have a radiocarbon ecology which leads to offsets in shell radiocarbon age, relative to contemporary biogenic carbon. We describe new methods for evaluating and calculating this offset. We radiocarbon date and apply the new methods to land snail food debris, from the deep MSA to Neolithic sequence in the Haua Fteah cave, NE Libya. Oxcal modelling of the resulting 136 dates over ~45000 years shows the site was used for short episodes separated by long periods of abandonment. The...
Radiocarbon results from (2021)
Reports of submitted radiocarbon samples to Beta Analytic in 2021 and 2022.
Radiometric dates from Mumba Rockshelter
Includes dates from Mehlman (1989) and Prendergast et al (2007; Prendergast 2008) excavations. Does not include dates currently in progress by Gliganic, Jacobs and Roberts.
Reanalysis of the Aterian Lithic Assemblage from Layer 6 of Mugharet el’Aliya: Specialized Activities in a Cave Context During the Middle Stone Age of Morocco (2024)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2024: Individual Abstracts" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The cave of El’Aliya on the Atlantic coast of Morocco contained a Middle Stone Age (MSA) occupational sequence that produced Aterian lithic assemblages (i.e. with tanged tools) dated to Marine Isotope Stage 3 (Layers 6 and 5). The site was excavated during the late 1930s and 1940s and the lithic assemblages from the MSA deposits were originally described...

Reassessing Plants and Pastoralist Foodways in Ancient Eastern Africa: A Preliminary Report on New Excavations at Luxmanda, Tanzania (2024)
This is an abstract from the "Exploring Long-Term Pastoral Dynamics: Methods, Theories, Stories" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Scholars increasingly emphasize that pastoralist foodways centered on livestock systems—being variable and flexible—are especially responsive to climate stress and other drivers of food insecurity. We ask something ostensibly simple but as yet poorly understood in eastern Africa: How, and why, have pastoralist foodways...
Recompiling the Archaeology of East Africa: The Swahili GIS Project, and What Comes Next (2019)
This is an abstract from the "Capacity Building or Community Making? Training and Transitions in Digital Archaeology" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The East African coast is famous for the stonetowns of the 'maritime trading' culture of the Swahili, but the scale of this region, fractured history of research, and scattered publication of work have until recently prevented macro-scale investigations of settlement patterns and coastal interactions....
Reconsidering Cattle and Power at Great Zimbabwe (2024)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2024: Individual Abstracts" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Great Zimbabwe (GZ) is key for understanding precolonial African urban systems. Cattle bones are some of the most common materials recovered from GZ and have played a central role in interpreting the ways power was enacted at the site over time. Scholars use dental wear and eruption data from cattle molars and long bone epiphyseal fusion patterns to argue...
Reconsidering Cereal Production and Consumption in the North Atlantic: A case study from Northern Iceland (2019)
This is an abstract from the "Mind the Gap: Exploring Uncharted Territories in Medieval European Archaeology" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. During the Viking Age, the Norse settled Iceland, a sub-arctic volcanic island at the climatic margin of cereal production. These settlers brought with them a distinctive subsistence economy involving animal husbandry and cereal production, most notably barley. Barley (Hordeum vulgare) has been noted by...
