ANALYSIS OF RESIDUE FROM AN ANASAZI POT FOR POLLEN AND FIBERS (1981)

The residue recovered from the bottom of an Anasazi black-on-white bowl found in Burial 4 of Group 4 in the Bob Shields Ruins near Goodman School in Montezuma County, Colorado by Cliff Chappell in April of 1961 was examined for pollen and fibers. This bowl had been exposed to the air for many years. Pollen and fiber analysis of the residue in the bottom of this vessel was designed to identify the composition of the residue.

Sites 5MT2433 (Aulston Kiva) and 5MT7060 were mitigated in connection with trenching for the construction of laterals for the Fairview Laterals project in conjunction with the Dolores Project. Site 5MT2433 exhibited both a kiva and a shallow rectangular mealing room, which were sampled in an effort to define activities within the structures. In addition, bone was collected during excavation of the kiva and during trenching of 5MT7060 and identified.

Sand Canyon Pueblo is located in Montezuma County in the southwest corner of the state of Colorado. This late Pueblo III site is situated at the head of Sand Canyon at an elevation of 6800 ft (2073 m). Sand Canyon ultimately drains into McElmo Creek at an elevation of 5400 ft (1646 m). Considerable topographic diversity is noted in the area, which would have provided habitats for a variety of flora and fauna. PRELIMINARY REPORT: POLLEN ANALYSIS AT 5MT5376 AND 5MT9433, MONTEZUMA COUNTY, COLORADO (1989)

Pollen samples were collected from features at 5MT5376 and SHT9433 to examine the vegetal portion of the subsistence base. These Basketmaker III sites are located near Yellowjacket Canyon in the Sand Canyon Facility Site Survey Area. 5MT5376 contains surface structures and an extramural pit that were sampled for pollen. 5MT9433, on the other hand, is represented by samples from roasting pits and hearths.
