Six soil samples were submitted from stratigraphic sediments at Site 2033- Tl (Keokea-ahupua'a). This land division is located in upcountry Maui. Sediment samples were collected from stratigraphic sediments alongside a previously excavated unit that yielded bones of eight or nine extinct birds. Analysis of these samples for phytoliths was undertaken to identify vegetation represented in these sediments. The elevation at this site was 2520 feet amsl. Fill samples from a possible agricultural mound at site CSH 53 and a basalt mound at site CSH 62, Maui, Hawaii, were submitted for pollen and phytolith analysis. These analyses were undertaken to identify what plants were grown at the agricultural mound and identify a function for the basalt mound.

Two pollen, two phytolith, and twelve protein residue samples were examined from ten sites in the Kahikinui District of Maui. The Kahikinui District has been described as vegetatively barren at the time of contact (Kirch and Gilder, 1996:38-40). Pollen and phytolith analyses focused on identification of plants that may have been exploited by occupants of four of these sites.
