Single pollen samples from ten cores from the Cheyenne River area in South Dakota were examined in search of evidence that might indicate that these sediments accumulated during the historic era. Pollen evidence for the historic era includes pollen from plants known to have been introduced into the western United States during the historic era and are not native to this area.
