(Almost) Making it in the Margins: Medieval Norse Adaptation to the Arctic Fjord Environments (2018)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Christian K. Madsen. Jette Arneborg. Ian Simpson. Michael Nielsen. Cameron Turley.

The medieval Norse settlements in Greenland formed the westernmost frontier of Scandinavia, and the Old World, between ca. AD 980-1450. A Norse society of perhaps only some 2500 farmer-hunters settled two subarctic niches: the Eastern Settlement in South Greenland with ca. 550 sites and the smaller Western Settlement 500 km north in the inner parts of the Nuuk fjord region and with only some 90 sites. For still not completely understood reasons, the latter was completely abandoned by AD...

Climate Change, Capacity-Building and Local Engagement: Report on the 2018 Arctic Viking Field School, Vatnahverfi, South Greenland (2019)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Hans Harmsen. Christian Koch Madsen. Elie Pinta. Michael Nielsen.

This is an abstract from the "Accelerating Environmental Change Threats to Cultural Heritage: Serious Challenges, Promising Responses" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The Eastern Arctic is currently observed to be undergoing significant environmental change as a direct consequence of global warming. For archaeologists working in Greenland, this means the rapid and complete loss of cultural remains due to changing soil conditions. As annual...

Community-Based and Collaborative Archaeology in South Greenland: Past, Present, Future (2019)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Cameron Turley. Aká Bendtsen.

This is an abstract from the "Celebrating Anna Kerttula's Contributions to Northern Research" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Archaeologists are increasingly engaging in community-based and collaborative approaches to develop frameworks for co-production of knowledge and its dissemination. Encouraging collaborative frameworks and community engagement has been a key element of the NSF Arctic Social Sciences Program under Anna Kerttula's leadership....

EAGERs and RAPIDs – Small Grants with Big Outcomes at Surtshellir Cave, Iceland (2019)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Kevin Smith.

This is an abstract from the "Celebrating Anna Kerttula's Contributions to Northern Research" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Anna Kerttula's stewardship of NSF's Arctic Social Sciences program not only expanded opportunities for large-scale collaborative research projects in the North, but also increased opportunities for supporting smaller "high risk" and "time-sensitive" projects through the EAGER and RAPID programs. These smaller projects,...

Everyday Objects and the Lived Experience: Inhabiting Gufuskálar, a Late Medieval Icelandic Fishing Station (2019)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Sant Mukh Khalsa.

This is an abstract from the "SANNA v2.2: Case Studies in the Social Archaeology of the North and North Atlantic" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Early Icelandic fishing stations are understood primarily through the shifting role of fishing within the Icelandic economy and the importance of fish provisioning within the North Atlantic. Thus, less focus has been placed on studying the lived experiences and domestic lives of people who worked at and...

Expanding Archaeological Research in Mývatnssveit: Conservation, Politics, and Modernity (2019)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Megan Hicks.

This is an abstract from the "Celebrating Anna Kerttula's Contributions to Northern Research" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Archaeological research in the Mývatn region of northern Iceland contributed the first regional-scale interdisciplinary archaeological program to Icelandic archaeology (e.g. Lucas 2009, McGovern et al. 2007). Until recently the regional project focused chiefly on the settlement period (beginning in the late 9th century)...

Fowling and Food Security in the Faroe Islands (2018)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Seth Brewington.

Seabird fowling has long played an important role in the traditional domestic economy of the Faroe Islands, a small North Atlantic archipelago. Direct evidence for seabird exploitation in the earliest period of Faroese prehistory has been lacking, however. In this paper, I present new archaeofaunal evidence for substantial and sustained seabird exploitation in the Faroe Islands from the 9th through 13th centuries CE. The data suggest that seabirds represented a significant resource in the...

From Medieval Wool Tunics to Bone Powder: Rapid Degradation of Norse Middens in Southwest Greenland (2018)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Konrad Smiarowski. Christian Madsen. Michael Nielsen.

This presentation is one of the products of a series of ongoing inter-connected, international, interdisciplinary fieldwork projects coordinated by the North Atlantic Biocultural Organization (NABO) research cooperative since 2005 in Greenland. The projects drew upon more than a century of prior field research, where four generations of archaeologists described and assessed organic preservation conditions at their sites in several regions of the Norse Eastern Settlement. This created a unique...
