These are studies that examine aspects of the present or past natural environment to provide a context, often off-site, for interpreting archaeological resources. Sometimes reported in stand-alone volumes representing significant research, such investigations may include geomorphological, paleontological, or palynological work.

PALYNOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS AT 5ME217: A ROCK SHELTER IN WESTERN COLORADO (1977)
A rock shelter, site 5ME217 in Mesa County, Colorado was the site of archaeological investigation by the Office of Public and Contract Archaeology. Pollen samples were taken from the occupational levels of the rock shelter in an effort to determine whether or not pollen was preserved in the cultural levels, and to study the paleoenvironment.
PALYNOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS AT DEBEQUE ROCKSHELTER (SME82) IN WESTERN COLORADO (1979)
Palynological analysis at the DeBeque Rockshelter (SME82) in western Colorado was undertaken in conjunction with archaeological mitigation of the site. The pollen samples were taken from most of the levels identified in the fill from four grid locations within the rockshelter, and are combined to form a composite pollen diagram. Palynological Investigations of Archeological Sediments from the New Hebrides: Preliminary Report (1966)
Study of 97 pollen samples suggests that pollen occurs in sufficient quantity for analysis, that economic pollen types occur, and that pollen sequences indicate paleoenvironmental changes over time. An extraction technique for recovering sufficient pollen for analysis is described for samples dominated by coral sand particles. 29 pollen taxa were recognized in the analysis of a series of samples from a Futuna Island rockshelter.
Palynological Investigations of Cache River Project Sediment Samples (1974)
Study of the pollen of 10 archaeological-context samples was limited to observation of number of grains per sample. Results suggest further research would be difficult because of low pollen concentrations, but of archaeological value for chronological control if certain conditions were met.
Palynological Records of Joe's Valley Alcove: a Multicomponent Site in Southeastern Utah (1974)
Palynological study of 18 samples, including 5 associated with Archaic Period radiocarbon dates and 1 associated with Fremont Culture artifacts, identifies a pollen sequence for the site. The inferred paleoclimatic sequence fully agrees with dated sequences from central New Mexico and the Llano Estacado (NM-TX).

Palynological Study of Sediment Samples from La Planta, Puerto Rico (1988)
Pilot study suggests Puerto Rican archaeological-context sediment samples contain pollen but further research will be needed to develop a cost-effective extraction technique, and many samples may not have adequate pollen concentrations to justify paleoenvironmental interpretation.

Sediment samples associated with a Mesolithic site on the shore of Tatton Mere contain pollen "downwashed" through the deposits since establishment of a soil on an aeolian dune that developed at the locale in Romano-British times. Parasitological and Macrobotanical Analyses of a Late-18th Century Privy, Portsmouth, New Hampshire (2011)
Five soil samples from a late eighteenth-century privy at the Wentworth site in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, were submitted to the Fiske Center for parasitological and macrobotanical analysis in order to illuminate the diet, health, and sanitation practices of the site's occupants. Over 2000 macrobotanical remains were recovered from these five samples, as well as 516 parasite ova which were interpreted as evidence of both roundworm (Ascaris sp.) and whipworm (Trichuris sp.) infestation....
A Parasitological Examination of a Sample from Feature 10, the Armoury Site, Virginia (2011)
One sediment sample from the Armoury, an 18th-century forge site located in Williamsburg, Virginia, was submitted to the Fiske Center for Archaeological Research for parasitological examination.
