Surface samples and stratigraphic sample series from 3 archaeological occupation sites and 2 samples from a burial site were examined for pollen in hopes of establishing a pollen sequence and paleoenvironmental interpretations. Both objectives achieved. Discussions of absolute dates of Woodland and Upper Republican contexts in this area and cultural ecology are included.

Pilot study to assess the type of archaeological-context pollen samples most likely to yield results commensurate with investment. Results suggest floor sediment and floor feature fill deposits will yield better data for developing a pollen sequence than floor contact deposits. Paleoenvironmental reconstruction, however, will require financial support for a major surface sample control research effort that cannot be justified as site-focussed cultural resources management.

Study of 23 pollen samples associated with archaeological sites in the Walhalla Glades district of Grand Canyon National Park yields surface sample data not consistant with prior research, possibly because the samples are actually of sediment deposited during the period the sites were occupied. Pollen record suggests local prehistoric cultivation in a paleoenvironment quite distinct from that presently occurring in this district.

Unpublished report, 1960 Describes pollen study of 115 samples from Wetherill Mesa (Mesa Verde National Park) undertaken at the Geochronology Laboratories, University of Arizona. Stratified pollen records from site 1205 provide information on past environmental events; records from site 1200 (Long House) contain horizon markers and a record of cultural activities. The majority of samples analyzed in an attempt to determine a palynological identifier of cornfields were unproductive.

Study of pollen samples from these two Reeve Phase sites was undertaken excluding Cheno-am and Compositae pollen from the pollen sum. Cross-dating suggests a five-horizon pollen sequence; three horizons are evidenced a both sites, the other two are from samples superimosed on the occupation floors of rooms.
