Lithic Materials and Fort Bridger (2001)

As a result of the test excavations, a team of archaeologists from Western Wyoming College initiated a long-term research project beginning in 1990. The excavations led by this team focused on the area south of the enlisted men's barracks,...

Meandering Paths of Archival Memory: Placing the Mountain Meadows Massacre on Disturbed Landscapes (2023)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Everett J Bassett.

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Paper Bodies: Excavating Archival Tissues and Traces", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. Although the 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre site, where approximately 120 emigrants were murdered by Mormon militia in Utah, is considered a seminal event in American history, the accurate location of the event was not well understood. The original Provo, Utah Tabernacle was constructed from 1856 to 1867. It was one of the earliest tabernacles built by the Mormon pioneers in Utah Territory. It was razed in 1919 and largely forgotten after many of its functions shifted to a second tabernacle constructed on the same city block. This second tabernacle was tragically ravaged by fire in December 2010, but the LDS Church is currently converting the burned-out shell into a new Mormon temple. In anticipation of site disturbance, the...

Test excavations were conducted November 31 and December 1, 1989 along the south side of the Mormon Wall to determine whether intact historic deposits were present in the area. Since the 1989 excavations, much has been learned about the Mormon Occupation at Fort Bridger and we have gained a better comprehension of the nature and activities of the Mormon Colonies in the area. What follows is the original report in total with new sections of: 1) a historic overview, 2) a discussion of the...
