In June of 1977 an intense forest fire took place in Bandelier National Monument and on adjacent United States Forest Service lands burning approximately 15,270 acres. A significant number of archaeological sites were differentially affected by the fire and the La Mesa Fire Study was initiated by the National Park Service to determine the various effects of fire on archaeological sites and materials.
