The Bisti sites are located in northwestern New Mexico near the town of El Huerfano. Site elevations range around 5900 feet above sea level. The surrounding predominant plant community is open grassland with a few scattered juniper. Associated plants include: four-wing saltbush (Atriplex canescens), wolfberry (Lycium sp.), snakeweed (Gutierrezia sp.), yucca (Yucca sp.), and various grasses. The area has been heavily overgrazed.
