Surveys in 1997 and 1998 recorded 89 Classic Maya sites with 254 structures in the near periphery of Piedras Negras, Guatemala. Twenty-five sites were test pitted and five were intensively excavated. Recent re-analysis of the ceramic, lithic and architectural data from these sites provides new insights into how the Late Classic Maya (A.D. 625-825) in the near periphery participated in the Piedras Negras kingdom. Population size and implications for conflict are considered. Comparison of material...

The People's Response to Change: Settlement Patterns During the Classic-Postclassic Transition in the Puebla-Tlaxcala Valley, Mexico (2018)
The Puebla-Tlaxcala Valley in Central Mexico went through significant settlement, economic, and political shifts during the Classic-Postclassic transition, yet there is no clear picture of what happened during the Epiclassic (600-900CE) or the Early Postclassic (900-1250CE) outside of large primary sites such as Cacaxtla and Cholula. A multi-faceted study was developed to target this issue, with a particular focus on rural sites that supported known large centers. Since the early years of...

This is an abstract from the "Recent Archaeological Investigations in Chiapas, Mexico" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The Late Preclassic (400 BC–AD 250) ceremonial center of Noh K’uh was designed in a quincunx pattern to commemorate the importance of cardinality and cosmological symbols. This kind of architectural design was commonplace in Preclassic Mesoamerica, as the earliest populations shaped their ceremonial spaces in reverence to natural...

The Peten Campechano: A Functional and socioeconomic analysis of its settlement patterns (2016)
The 1980’s construction of the road to the archaeological site of Calakmul, Campeche made it necessary to record 86 sites on and alongside its trajectory and in the area around the Chumpich Lagoon down to Uxul on the Guatemalan border. The systematic location and mapping of each site and their associated cultural elements as well as flora, geology and paleoclimatology have permitted us to identify a variation in their architecture as well as settlement patterns and access to resources. In this...
