The Chacoan polity of northwestern New Mexico exercised hegemony throughout the San Juan Basin and surrounding highlands during the Pueblo II (A.D. 900 – 1140) period. Hegemony is defined as the predominant influence in ideological, political, military, and/or economic matters exercised by one culture over another.
