In the 1950s avocational archaeologist Fritz Knechtel discovered several important archaeological sites near Inverhuron Bay, Ontario, on the eastern shore of Lake Huron. Early professional investigations were conducted by Tom Lee and J.V. Wright of the National Museum of Canada and Walter Kenyon of the Royal Ontario Museum.
