Hughes’s (1988) dissertation showed a relationship between late prehistoric settlement patterns on the Washita River of Oklahoma and the soils of that region, among other variables. This paper is an effort to extend that research north into the Walnut River Valley of Kansas. The valley of the Walnut in Butler and Cowley Counties is a rich archeological area that has had little synthetic analysis conducted.
