According to early historic accounts that depict coastal Virginia and North Carolina, maize was a component of Native American diet by the late 16th and early 17th centuries. There remain questions, however, regarding the introduction of maize into the region and how it was incorporated into local subsistence regimes, especially within a coastal setting.
