The early nineteenth century was tumultuous for Barry County in southwest Missouri. Originally made up of unclaimed acreage and the land grants for the Osage and Delaware Native American tribes, the area was redefined as a county when Missouri reached statehood in 1821 and then later divided into four smaller counties.
