This article reports of the experimental project of harvesting emmer and spelt wheat with Iron Age techniques at Butser Ancient Farm. It addresses problems and theoretical improvements as well as what to do with failed crops during the Iron Age in Britain. The experiment was confronted with harsh weather conditions, as they might have occurred in the Iron Age too.

Our knowledge of past landscapes is drawn from a number of different sources. Primarily we rely upon assemblages of carbonised and charred seeds recovered from excavations of settlement sites of different periods. Alternatively pollen grains preserved in acid soil conditions, usually peat bogs, allow us to identify vegetation through time even down to individual plants.
