The Alaskan forward operating bases (FOBs) played a significant role in the United States’ strategic air defense in the early Cold War. Because the Alaskan FOBs were located close to the Soviet Union, and more importantly, close to Soviet bases used for bomber operations, the fighters stationed there could and did intercept the major share of Soviet aircraft that ventured into American airspace.
