Big game, large bird, and canid (dog/wolf/coyote) figures are the most obvious zoomorph petroglyph motifs in the Bighorn and Wind River Basins. Canid petroglyph motifs, with many apparently dating 2000-6000 B.P., or possibly older, tend to prevail in specific areas of the southern Bighorn and northeastern Wind River Basins. Archaeological excavations and research at 48CR4001 have been conducted from 1983 to 1993. The site, located approximately 16 miles south of Rawlins, Wyoming, is situated on the east face of a north-south trending exposure of Lance Formation sandstone.
