Examination of Metal Materials of Port Royal, Jamaica (2023)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Michael A Rivera.

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Ongoing Care and Study Through a Digital Catalogue of Port Royal", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. Excavations at Port Royal, Jamaica, have allowed for continued research into this 17th-century sunken city. Metal artifacts found throughout the site provide materials for in-depth analysis of the tools used by craftsmen and the general public. This allows for the examination of use, maker identification, and...

Gold (Tumbaga) and Butterfly Symbolism (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Elizabeth Baquedano.

When metals were introduced in Mesoamerica ca. AD 850 they were used with both utilitarian and decorative purposes. Copper artifacts were turned into fishing hooks, tweezers, or axes. They included pendants, nose-rings, necklaces, etc. Warriors were also depicted as pendants, and there are examples in discs too. The context where the objects have been...

The Late Introduction of Metals in Southern Italy: Studies from Sicily and Calabria (2019)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Andrea Vianello. Robert H. Tykot.

This is an abstract from the "SAA 2019: General Sessions" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Current hypotheses include an allogenous origin of metallurgy, brought by Aegean merchants, and an indigenous origin due to the presence of mines. The delicate state of many metals has prevented destructive analyses, but it has been...

Sicán political economy can be analyzed using the staple and wealth finance approach; in this talk I’ll focus on the latter. Interpretations about Sicán’s economy and exchange have been until now based mainly on the study of elite funerary contexts in the Sicán Core and ample craft production outside the city. In this talk, evidence of permanent...

The role of metals in Ychsma society: A case study of Panquilma (2016)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Qiang Wang. Enrique López-Hurtado.

In this paper I present a study of the role of metals at Panquilma site during the Ychsma phase (c. AD 1000-1470). Although metals were found in all three sectors at Panquilma (ceremonial, residential, and mortuary), the largest collection was from Sector 3, the burial area. Some mummy bundles were found in Sector 2, but they contain far fewer metals compared to the burial area. Similarly, very few metals were found in ritual or ceremonial contexts in Sector 1. It is widely accepted that metals...
