Remembering Jim Crow Again – Representing African American Experiences of Travel and Leisure at U.S. National Park Sites Critically (2018)
This discussion exams the cultural construction of heritage in terms of leisure, travel, and tourism with respect to race at U.S. National Park sites in the Southeast region. I argue for a more critical analysis of the centrality of race in discussions of stewardship of heritage resources. Risks and restrictions to freedom of movement and access to public sites of leisure were real for those identified as non-white in America prior to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In a much talked about speech...
Rennes-le-Château, history and myth in competition (2024)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2024: Individual Abstracts" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. In a small French village, discussions of medieval heretics and history have become combined by modern tourists. Popular literature has only added to the issue. Since the publication of pieces like Holy Blood, Holy Grail and the Da Vinci Code, the line between fact and fiction has grown thin. In 1965, excavations in Rennes-le-Château, the village which...

This musical instrument was already shown at the exhibition "The Golden Byzantium and the Orient" in 2012 at the...

The Role of Health and Wellness Tourism in the Evolution of Labor Regimes in the American South (2020)
This is a paper/report submission presented at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. In recent years, scholars have linked the rise of modern tourism with broader transformations in American capitalism during the nineteenth century, when the new “scientific” management of labor and capital led to the development of a large, managerial class of laborers within an increasingly service-oriented economy. Early forms of tourism typically centered on the medicinal...

Staging Tourism: Leisure and Consumption in Florida's Early Twentieth-Century Resorts (2018)
