An Analysis of Macrobotanical and Pollen Remains from Several Contexts Associated with the Manchester Boarding House (2006)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Susan Jacobucci.

Six bulk soil samples and one sample suitable for palynological analysis were submitted to the Fiske Center from a turn-of-the-century tenement boarding house yard in Manchester, New Hampshire. The six soil samples were submitted as pairs of samples taken from both 19th and 20th-century strata in order to examine change in landscape use over time. Macrobotanical analysis found high levels of weedy and ruderal plants in 19th-century context, as well as evidence of low-growing wild fruits such as...

Before and After Mazama at the Billy Big Spring Site: Landscape Evolution during Altithermal Times and Reoccupation after the Eruption (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Anna Jansson.

How did the ash fall from the Mount Mazama eruption (7682–7584 cal. yr BP (Egan et al. 2015)) affect the people on the Northwestern Plains who experienced it? Data from 24GL304 (the Billy Big Spring Site) in northcentral Montana is used to investigate this question. Excavations conducted in 1952, 1954, 1971 by Thomas Kehoe and in 2016 by our team all found extensive Middle and Late Plains Archaic deposits, but in 2016 we discovered a ~10 cm thick layer of ash from this eruption. This poster...

Marshland of Cities: Deltaic Landscapes and the Evolution of Early Mesopotamian Civilization (2003)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Jennifer Pournelle.

Prevailing theories of the evolution of early complex societies in southern Mesopotamia presume a uniform, arid landscape transited by Tigris and Euphrates distributaries. These theories hold that it was the seventh millennium BCE introduction of irrigation technologies from the northern alluvium to the south that began the punctuated evolution of Mesopotamian irrigation schemes. In this view, irrigation-dependent agro-pastoral production was the primary stimulus to urbanization and, millennia...
