This is an abstract from the "Isotopic and Animal aDNA Analyses in the Southwest/Northwest" session, at the 88th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The contributions of tree-ring dating to American archaeology are well known but the benefits of the technique have largely been restricted to the uplands of the northern Southwest. While tree-ring dates have been successfully obtained from a handful of sites in the Southwest/Northwest, dendrochronology has been hampered in...

Radiocarbon and Historical Archaeology in Iroquoia: Bringing Near-Calendar Dating Precision to Iroquoian Chronology with Radiocarbon – Methods, Issues and Potential (2019)
This is an abstract from the "Dating Iroquoia: Advancing Radiocarbon Chronologies in Northeastern North America" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. This paper outlines the aims and methods of the Dating Iroquoia project by which we propose to achieve calendar chronological precision from radiocarbon for Iroquoian sites at, or better than, the level of individual settlement spans – i.e. calendar resolution at the level of approximately one to two...
Radiocarbon Challenges: Tightening the Chronology of the Kura-Araxes Culture in the South Caucasus (2021)
This is an abstract from the "Constructing Chronologies II: The Big Picture with Bayes and Beyond" session, at the 86th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The Kura-Araxes horizon (KA; 3500–2500 BCE), which characterizes the EBA in the South Caucasus, is at the center of an archaeological debate regarding the timing of its development and dispersal into areas of the greater Near East, including eastern Anatolia, northwestern Iran, and the Southern Levant. Increasing...

This is an abstract from the "Posters on the Archaeology of the Southern Yukon-Alaska Borderlands" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The Little John site (Borden #KdVo-6) holds a sequential record of human occupation from the Allerød through to the present day, including early and later expressions of the Chindadn complex, the Denali complex, the Northern Archaic tradition, the Late Prehistoric/Dene, the Contact Transitional of the nineteenth and...

Radiocarbon Dating of Land Snail Shell and the Chronology of MSA-Neolithic Human Activity in the Haua Fteah, Libya (2018)
Land snails have a radiocarbon ecology which leads to offsets in shell radiocarbon age, relative to contemporary biogenic carbon. We describe new methods for evaluating and calculating this offset. We radiocarbon date and apply the new methods to land snail food debris, from the deep MSA to Neolithic sequence in the Haua Fteah cave, NE Libya. Oxcal modelling of the resulting 136 dates over ~45000 years shows the site was used for short episodes separated by long periods of abandonment. The...
Radiocarbon Dating the Iroquoian Occupation of Northern New York (2019)
This is an abstract from the "Dating Iroquoia: Advancing Radiocarbon Chronologies in Northeastern North America" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Fifty new, high-precision AMS radiocarbon dates have been obtained on maize, faunal remains and ceramic residues from 18 pre-contact Iroquoian village sites in northern New York. These dates add significant new information to the chronology of the Iroquoian occupation of the region. Once thought to span AD...
The Radiocarbon Record and Precolonial California (2024)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2024: Individual Abstracts" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Radiocarbon summed probability distributions (SPDs) have become increasingly popular as means to track demographic trends, and by association, any variety of explanations for changes in past behavior. This paper uses SPDs from across California to develop hypotheses as to the ostensible effects of climate, technological change, population movements, and...
Radiocarbon Wiggle-Matching on a Dendrochronologically Dated Timber Sample from Paquimé (2023)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2023: Individual Abstracts" session, at the 88th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Paquimé, or Casas Grandes, is one of the largest and most complex archaeological sites in the North American Southwest. Paquimé was of central and wide-reaching importance in the cultural region referred to as the Gran Chichimeca during the Medio period (AD 1200–1450), and therefore remains of crucial significance to borderland archaeology (Minnis 2003)....

Raw Material Procurement and Biface Production at Bonneville Estates Rockshelter, Nevada: A Long-Term Diachronic Approach (2018)
During the decade-long excavations at Bonneville Estates Rockshelter, eastern Nevada, a well-stratified sequence of cultural components spanning from Paleoindian times to the late Archaic was documented. In this poster we present the results of a comprehensive analysis of the biface and bifacial point assemblage from the shelter, exploring temporal variability in raw-material procurement and selection, production, and use of this artifact class from 13,000 years ago to the late prehistoric...
(Re)building the 87 Church Street Chronology: Archaeological Legacies and Telling Time in Urban Charleston (2022)
This is an abstract from the session entitled "The Emergence and Development of South Carolina Lowcountry Studies: Papers in Honor of Martha Zierden" , at the 2022 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. 87 Church Street, an urban townlot in Charleston, SC and the site of The Heyward-Washington House, has been the subject of a series of excavations since the 1970s. This has resulted in an expansive legacy collection and a foundational dataset for numerous studies of...
A Re-evaluation of Yotholin Pattern-Burnished: Evidence of Early Preclassic Ceramics? (2018)
In 1958, Brainerd first described "the earliest deposits yet to come from Yucatan"—composed primarily of narrow-mouthed jar fragments recovered from the lowest strata of excavations at the Mani cenote. This type, classified as Yotholin Pattern-Burnished, has a medium-fine paste and unslipped surfaces that had been smoothed or burnished in decorative patterns. Since then, similar wares have been recovered from Preclassic contexts at a number of other sites. Although Brainerd originally described...

Re-thinking social and chronological palimpsest. Inka domination in Quebrada de Humahuaca (Jujuy, Argentina) (2016)
In recent years, the scenario of Inka conquest in the Quebrada de Humahuaca includes different social landscapes that can’t be explained by traditional positions. These new perspectives have been improved by contributions from other regions of Northwestern Argentina and Collasuyu. In the case of Quebrada de Humahuaca, a region with a lack in early historical sources, the archaeological visibility of processes of social dynamics and handcraft production requires constant methodological...
