Building a better eggtimer: Amino acid dating of ostrich eggshell from South Africa (2015)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Kirsty Penkman. Molly Crisp. Beatrice Demarchi. Matthew Collins. Julia Lee-Thorp.

Chronology underpins our understanding of the past, but beyond the limit of radiocarbon dating (~50 ka), sites become more difficult to date. Amino acid geochronology, which uses the time-dependent breakdown of proteins in biominerals, has the potential to date the whole of the Quaternary. Ostrich eggshell (OES) is often associated with archaeological sites in Africa, as early humans utilised them as a food source, water carriers and for artistic purposes. OES’s calcitic structure potentially...

Geoarchaeology and Chronostratigraphy of the Sheep Rock Spring Site, Late Pleistocene to Holocene, Missouri River Headwaters Region, Southwest Montana (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Michael Wilson. Christopher L. Hill. Patrick J. Rennie. David C. Batten. Linda Scott Cummings.

The Sheep Rock Spring site (24JF292) lies in a small SW Montana valley between Sheep Rock and a residual tor. A late Quaternary sequence (>5 m) supports a chronostratigraphic model from dates on charred material in the upper two units: (1) basal rock landslide diamicton; (2) down-valley debris flows; (3) final Pleistocene-early Holocene (FP-EH, >10,200-8700 RCYBP) channel/floodplain alluvium and paleosols; and (4) mid-Holocene (MH, ca. 6000-5430 RCYBP) alluvial/colluvial fan with paleosols....

Geochronology of the Tse-whit-zen Project (2015)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Sarah Sterling. Ian Hutchinson. Jennie Shaw.

The use of high precision dates provides a chronological framework for reconstructing environmental conditions at the Tse-whit-zen site (45CA523) in Washington state. The geochronology of the site in is derived from high-precision radiocarbon dates taken from finely excavated deposits, with ages spanning the time period from ca. 2000 BP to contact. We have added 36 high precision AMS dates from short lived organic material, recovered from intact contexts, to the 52 original dates reported in...

Integrating Bones, Soils and Dates: Late Pleistocene-Holocene Settings and Human Occupations in the Pampas of Argentina (2016)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Maria Gutierrez. Gustavo Politis. Gustavo Martinez.

A great increase of archaeological knowledge from the Pampean region of Argentina occurred in the last 20 years. Three main approaches were explored in detail by means of archaeological research that contributed to broadening our understanding of hunter-gatherers in the past: interdisciplinary studies, geochronology, and taphonomy. These perspectives were either initiated or reinforced in our projects by Eileen Johnson. The aim of this presentation is to highlight the main contributions that...

Late Quaternary Radiocarbon Geochronology and Stratigraphy on the Northern Plains: Silts, Mammoths, and Buried Soils in the Lower Yellowstone Valley, Montana (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Christopher Hill.

Within the Yellowstone River basin, in eastern Montana, upland landscapes contain silts with buried soils. Radiocarbon measurements from bone and the paleosols provide a basis for proposing a regional chronostratigraphic model. At the Lindsay locality, north of the Yellowstone River, mammoth remains were recovered within silts overlain by a buried soil A-horizon. Samples from the mammoth have been analyzed by six laboratories, using beta decay or AMS. If the radiocarbon determinations older...

Missouri Basin Chronology Program Statements Nos. 1-5 (1964)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Smithsonian Institution, Missouri Basin Project.

This document includes the first five chronology program statements for the Missouri Basin Project. The Program, as it now stands, was developed during the winter of 1958 by the Personnel of the Missouri Basin Project, Smithsonian Institution; the laboratory of Anthropology, University of Nebraska; and the Nebraska State Historical Society; all of Lincoln, Nebraska; and the National Park Service, Region Two Office, in Omaha, Nebraska. Concern for an over-all program of chronology grew out of an...

New Carbon-14 (14C) Dates on "Old" Cultural Components near Quartz Lake, Interior Alaska (2015)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Jennifer Kielhofer. Josh Reuther. Francois Lanoë. Dave Plaskett. Jason Rogers.

As part of the Quartz Lake/Shaw Creek Flats research initiative, excavations took place in 2014 at the Cook, Keystone Dune and Klein sites in the middle Tanana Valley, interior Alaska. Although these sites were previously tested, continued excavation was vital to expand the 14C chronology and enhance understanding of prehistoric subarctic foraging behavior and paleoecology. At the Klein site, our goal was to gather more geochronological information on a component previously dated ~3700-5100 cal....
