San Luis was one of the most important Spanish missions in Apalachee Province, the region between the Aucilla and Ochlockonee Rivers, during the Mission Period (1633-1704). San Luis de Talimali (8LE4), the mission's second location (1656-1704), was purchased by the state of Florida in 1983 and historical and archaeological research of the site continues to the present.
