An Analysis of Lithic Production at the La Milpa Sinkhole (RB-25-A5) (2015)
Caves are prominent earth openings in Maya sites that are widely recognized as being important sacred landmarks. There is a wide range of earth openings at sites, however, that are rarely recognized as possible landmarks and this can impact the interpretation of associated artifacts. Investigation of the La Milpa Sinkhole (RB-25-A5) is a case in point. Investigation in 2012 classified the feature as a trash pit. The recovery of large quantities of what were thought to be chert flakes led to the...

Analytical Approaches for Identifying Ritual Contexts (2017)
Paleoethnobotanists continue to push plants into the realm of social archaeology, particularly in terms of examining how plants articulated with ancient ritual practices. The examination of the connection between plants and ritual, however, is not a straightforward process—researchers must first appropriately identify special contexts and/or foods, after which they must attribute meaning to the contexts and events they have identified. This presentation focuses on the first step – identification...

Beyond the Visible: Identifying Microscopic Erosion in Ceramics Used for Alcohol Fermentation. An Application of Scanning Electron Microscopy in Archaeology (2016)
Ethnographic research on low-fired pottery has demonstrated that the production of alcohol deteriorates the interior vessels’ wall leaving deep pitting marks. Similar pitting is seen on some jars and sherds from the North American Southwest and Northern Mexico, causing researchers to suggest that alcohol was brewed in this region before European contact. The identification of these marks on archaeological materials relies on an observer to visually confirm and quantify the level of erosion...
The Cattewater Wreck Archive Project (2013)
The Cattewater Wreck was the first wreck to be protected by the UK Government and was partially excavated in the 1970s. The Tudor wreck is believed to be an unidentified armed merchantman. The Cattewater Wreck Archive Project, funded by English Heritage, recently improved the long term care and management of the archive held in Plymouth City Museum. Modern tools and techniques have been applied to the archive, such as stable isotope analysis of fish remains, allowing new interpretations to be...

Clusters of Beads: Testing for Time in an Eighteenth Century Well (2018)
This paper presents a continuation of the bead study presented at the 2015 SHA conference in which beads from a South Carolina frontier site dating from c.1680-1734 on the Drayton Hall property were tested against Jon Marcoux’s 2012 correspondence analysis of 35,000 glass trade beads from Native American mortuary contexts dated c.1607-1783. The 2012 study discerned four distinct clusters of time from the beads within mortuary contexts. The current paper examines an additional dataset of beads...

Not Landscape: Landscape Archaeology as Bricolage (2017)
The late 80s and 90s saw an explosion of landscape studies in archaeology. The notion of landscape was herald as a ‘usefully ambiguous concept’ (Gosden and Head 1994) that was to be applied everywhere only to be later scrutinized and criticized. The emergent interest in landscapes helped archaeologists expand their understanding of the widely diverse range of relationships people maintain with their surroundings, and precipitated a renewed interest in the study of landscapes at a more intimate...
