Sea-level Rise at an Inundated Ancient Maya Salt Work: New Information from the Eleanor Betty Site, Paynes Creek National Park, Belize (2017)
Underwater excavations were performed at Eleanor Betty in 2013 to assess sea-level rise, map preserved wooden architecture, and investigate the inundated shell midden associated with the site. A total of 39 sediment samples were subjected to loss-on ignition (the burning of sediment to obtain the percent of organic matter present) and microscopically sorted in order to identify and analyze organic and inorganic matter. All samples were high in organic content and contained an abundance of fine...
Siedlungsarchäologie der Hallstatt- und Frühlatènezeit im Raum Heilbronn (2002)
This dissertation covers the settlement history of the Heilbronn area (Baden-Württemberg, Germany) in the Hallstatt and Early Latène periods (8th to 4th century BC). The area covered measures approximately 30 by 40 km. It is divided by geology, soil types and climate into two contrasting parts: the loess covered land of the Neckar valley and its tributaries, and the surrounding marl and sandstone hills. The analyzed finds mainly consist of ceramic fragments. Most of the few metal objects were...
The Social Dimensions of Complex Industries: Insights from a Thin Section Microscopy Study of Aztec Salt-Making Pottery (2015)
In this paper, I show how thin section microscopy enhances our understanding of the social relations and technological sequences of production in the Late Postclassic (1350-1520 AD) salt industry of the northern Basin of Mexico. Aztec salt-making sites have dense concentrations of "fabric-marked" pottery, which is a light, friable ware distinguished by impressions of textiles on its exterior surface. Fabric-marked pottery was probably used to mold blocks of salt for sale in the market. Because...

Underwater Transect Excavations, Sediment Coring, Remoting Sensing at the Paynes Creek Salt Works (2017)
Following the discovery and mapping of over 100 salt works in a shallow, salt-water lagoon system, a collaborative, interdisciplinary research project was initiated with funding from NSF to examine the ancient landscape, sea-level rise, use of the wooden buildings for salt production and as residences, and reconstruct the underwater sites using 3D GIS. Sediment coring across the lagoon system identified red mangrove peat, an indicator of actual sea-level rise, as well as a plethora of pollen...
United by Process, Divided by Everything Else: Caddo and Settler Saltmaking at the Holman Springs Site, Sevier County, Arkansas (2024)
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Paper / Report Submission (General Sessions)", at the 2024 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. The Red River of the Southeast is one area where shallow subterranean salt deposits mix with groundwater to produce briny marshes. Successive communities residing in the area rendered those brines into salt. How they did so, what they used the salt for, and how it affected their relationships with neighbors differed drastically...
