Faunal Remains (1985)
DATASET Uploaded by: Jesse Clark

The faunal dataset is comprised of 81,947 specimens, recovered from a variety of contexts within the Dolores Project area (Neusius 1985c; Petersen, Matthews et al. 1986). Nonhuman macrofaunal remains collected during site excavations are by far the most abundant in the DAP assemblage (n=76,224), followed by microfaunal specimens (n=5,723) collected by way of dry screening and flotation processing (Petersen, Matthews et al. 1986). A third set of miscellaneous remains include specimens recovered...

Fishing Practices and Effective Seasons: An Evaluation of Zooarchaeological-Based Seasonality Studies in the Lower Suwannee Region of Florida (2016)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Andrea Palmiotto.

This paper critically evaluates the concept of seasons as utilized in zooarchaeological studies of coastal settlements. The project aims to show that "seasons," as a matter of perception, emerge from interplay between natural processes and human practices. Because processes and practices vary geographically and historically, effective seasons are contingent on local circumstances and histories. This paper presents methods for utilizing data on present-day fish populations in the Lower Suwannee...

A Fishy Study on Site Aggregation and Construction at Florida’s Crystal River (8CI1) and Roberts Island (8CI40 and 41) Sites (2018)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Liz Southard.

Fishing economies are often described as a principal form of subsistence for prehistoric Florida communities. However, seasonality analyses on fish remains, which have the potential to reveal patterns pertaining to population aggregations and the pace of construction projects, are generally underutilized. This research uses marginal increment analysis of otoliths (fish ear-stones) to investigate whether seasonal deposition events were taking place at two Woodland period sites: the Crystal River...

From Flame to Flowers: Moths and Butterflies in the Codex Borgia Group (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Susan Milbrath.

Butterfly imagery in the Borgia Group shows how these volatiles were classified in Postclassic Central Mexico. They are grouped with birds among the 13 "lords of the day" in the Codex Borgia, and they sometimes seem to be interchangeable with moths, especially in imagery of the Fire God. Another god, Ehecatl-Quetzalcoatl, is associated with images of "army worms" devouring maize, symbolizing the caterpillar stage of a moth that distributes its eggs in the wind. Butterfly symbols are naturally...

Home is Where the Herd Is: Social Factors and Mobility Patterns in Prehistoric Kazakhstan (2015)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Tekla Schmaus.

Our understanding of the structure of pastoralist societies in prehistoric Eurasia is currently being reevaluated in light of new data from a range of sources. I present the results of a cementum annulation study done on domestic sheep teeth from prehistoric pastoralist communities in Semirech’ye, Kazakhstan. These data provide evidence that past mobility patterns were not necessarily rigidly dictated by seasonal climate conditions. Rather, although the environment was certainly a major factor...

Investigating Seasonality of Fishing, and trade during the Maya Postclassic, with otoliths thin-sections from the inland site of Mayapan. (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Jeff Bryant. Robert Feranec. Nayeli Jiminez Cano. Marilyn Masson.

This paper will offer preliminary results of fish otolith thin-section growth ring analysis from the Postclassic archaeological site of Mayapan, Yucatan, Mexico. This study offers the first use of otoliths for investigating seasonality of the fish trade in the Yucatan, utilizing perhaps the largest collection of otoliths from an inland site in the Maya world. Data on seasonality, age, and size of several fish species are presented, and discussed in the context of trade ethnohistory, ecology,...
