Pottery in the colonies: the silent marker revisited (2013)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Javier Iñañez. Marisol Madrid i Fernandez. Jaume Buxeda i Garrigos.

The contact between the European and the Native American worlds was the beginning of a period of conquest and colonization that disrupted the tradition of the native populations, giving pass to a new political, economical, religious, and town-planning period. While the first European foundations were just survival driven ones, they became a strategic foundation in order to develop a proper colonial enterprise. The European culture arrival into the Americas brought also a new material culture...

Pottery on board in the end of 18th century. (2013)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Joanna A. Dabal.

In this article the author presents two different complexes from similar time. One of them constitutes pottery finds from English vessel W-32 – the General Carleton of Whitby which sunk in 1785. The second complex of finds is that excavated from Dutch vessel which sank between 1791-1793. Probably the name of the vessel was De Jonge Seerp. Both of the pottery complexes remind different habits on English and Dutch vessels and tell the story about everyday life of the crew. Similar dates of both...

In the area commonly known as Pampa del Tamarugal, in the middle portion of the Atacama Desert, the valleys of Tarapacá, Guatacondo, and the oasis of Quillagua have been important spaces for characterizing the Formative period in northern Chile. In this paper, we present the results of pottery analyses from this region, comprised by samples obtained from residential and ceremonial contexts, as well as transitory sites along prehispanic routes (Fondecyt Project 1130279). Pottery use in Alaskan prehistory: an organic residue analysis approach (2015)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Thomas Farrell. Peter Jordan. Rick Knecht. Oliver Craig.

Despite major environmental challenges, pottery was manufactured and used by Palaeo- and Neo-Eskimos in Alaska for millennia. To better understand why pottery was used by Alaskan hunter-gatherers, the authors have undertaken a number of site-based organic residue analyses that provide direct biomolecular and isotopic evidence for the contents of past pots. The ubiquitous presence of aquatic biomarkers, along with compound specific isotope data, show that pottery use at the sites was consistently...

No contemporary study of archaeological pottery is complete without some form of...

Practicing Informal Apprenticeship: a study of learning landscapes in 15th-16th century potting groups in upstate New York (2016)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Steven Dorland.

Pottery vessels that are produced by younger community members are highly effective avenues for addressing learning structures and social interactions of Great Lakes potting groups. Yet, learner actions are often isolated by archaeologists from the actions of experienced potters in the belief that variation is random and does not follow similar stylistic and manufacturing practices. Furthermore, traditional belief portrays pottery learning as passive transmission of knowledge, an interpretation...
