Fire and Ash: Formative Period Environmental Chronologies in Eastern Mesoamerica (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Jon Lohse. Derek Hamilton. Takeshi Inomata. Hector Neff.

Recent dating work has led to revision of regional political chronologies in the Guatemala Highlands. In particular, key Middle and Late Formative phases now date as much as 300 years later than previously believed. This reanalysis brings these phases in line with significant environmental conditions stemming from volcanism and drought. In this paper, we present new high-precision chronologies for these environmental records, and compare these records against regional political chronologies in...

Looking for Sites in all the Wrong Places: Finding Evidence of Preceramic Occupations in Northern Highland Ecuador (2019)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Maria-Auxiliadora Cordero.

This is an abstract from the "Research and CRM Are Not Mutually Exclusive: J. Stephen Athens—Forty Years and Counting" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. J.S. Athens and colleagues recently published evidence of early maize (6,600 CAL BP) from a lake core in northern highland Ecuador. Deposits with maize phytoliths and pollen were interspersed with ash layers from volcanic eruptions. The various geological processes that have shaped the environment...

A Record of Late Holocene Volcanic Activity from Highland Guatemala (2015)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Jon Lohse. Derek Hamilton. Victoria Smith. Mark Brenner. Jason Curtis.

A record of late Holocene volcanic activity in highland Guatemala was inferred from sediment and tephra stratigraphy in two cores from Lake Amatitlan. Electron microprobe analysis of glass from the tephra samples suggests most eruption deposits are of local origin, coming from nearby Volcanoes Pacaya and Fuego. The 6th-century Ilopango ash is clearly visible, and a few tephra samples have not been correlated to particular volcanoes or eruption events. Using dates from this sequence with others...

A Thousand Years after the Volcano Erupted: TBJ Deposits and Use at Ciudad Vieja, El Salvador (2016)
DOCUMENT Citation Only William Fowler. Raquel López Rodríguez.

The impact of the eruption of Ilopango Volcano in the early sixth century A.D. has been a focus of Payson Sheets' research for more than four decades. The signature of this eruption is the distinctive "tierra blanca joven" (TBJ) layer found at sites in central and western El Salvador. Our excavations in 2013-15 at Ciudad Vieja, the archaeological remains of the Conquest-period town of San Salvador, have allowed us to identify a hitherto unknown site in the distribution of TBJ tephra. In some...

Volcanic hazards pose by Tacaná to the Soconusco region (2015)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Jose Luis Macias. José Luis Arce. Paul W Layer. Ricardo Saucedo.

The Tacaná Volcanic Complex consists of four volcanic edifices: Chichuj, Tacaná, and San Antonio volcanoes, and Las Ardillas dome. It began its formation ~225 ka yr ago at Chichuj, followed by Tacaná ~50 ka, and San Antonio volcano and las Ardillas Dome during late Pleistocene. Its volcanic history recorded during the past 50 ka yr indicates that the complex has experienced major flank failures at Tacaná (~15 ka) and San Antonio (~2 ka). The latter destroyed the southern flank of San Antonio...

The Volcano That Went Boom: Payson Sheets’ Contributions to Understanding the Tierra Joven Blanca Eruption of the Ilopango Caldera, El Salvador (2016)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Rachel Egan.

Payson Sheets’ seminal work on the Tierra Joven Blanca (TBJ) eruption of the Ilopango Caldera, El Salvador was one of the first projects to address the impact of large-scale disasters in Mesoamerica. The on-going research on this eruption has been important for understanding the event as well as developing method and theory for reconstructing the cultural impact(s) of sudden massive stresses. While originally dated to AD 290±110, the TBJ eruption has been re-dated to the mid 5-6th century and...
