New Excavations at the La Prele Mammoth Site, Converse County, Wyoming (2017)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Madeline Mackie. Todd Surovell. Robert Kelly. Matthew O'Brien.

The La Prele Mammoth site (formerly the Hinrichs or Fetterman Mammoth) was discovered and initially excavated in 1987 by a crew led by Dr. George Frison. The remains of a single juvenile Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) were recovered along with a stone tool, a possible hammerstone, and a dozen pieces of debitage. Due to landowner dispute, no further work was completed on site for 27 years. In 2014 we returned to investigate the potential for intact deposits and settle the debate about...

Paleoecology of the Late Pleistocene Fauna from the Lamb Spring Site, Colorado (2018)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Russell Graham. Dennis Stanford. E. James Dixon. Thomas W. Stafford Jr..

The Lamb Spring site located in central Colorado is a late Quaternary locality with stratified Pleistocene and Holocene faunal remains. The late Pleistocene component is dominated by mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) but contains other grazing taxa like horse, bison, American camel, Harlan’s ground sloth, etc. The general lack of microfauna from this horizon makes detailed paleoecological interpretations difficult. However, the megafauna point to a dominance of grassland with the possibility of...

A Possible Mammoth Kill Site in Northeastern New Mexico (2016)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Warren Lail. Victoria Evans. Amanda Aragon. Joaquin Montoya.

Several years ago in a remote canyon in northeastern New Mexico, a rancher found the fragmented remains of what was later determined to be a Columbian Mammoth (Mammuthus columbi). In addition to the mammoth remains, now dated to 13,000 BP, the rancher also found several blades, allegedly in context, of chert that originated on the Edwards Plateau in central Texas (microanalysis of the blades is underway). Re-evaluating the evidence for systematic exploitation of mammoth during the European Middle Palaeolithic. (2015)
DOCUMENT Citation Only Geoff Smith.

The recurrent presence of mammoth, elephant and rhinoceros at Middle Palaeolithic sites, together with Neanderthal isotopes signalling meat as a prominent protein source, have been used to argue for a central role of these species in Neanderthal subsistence. Key to this model are the bone heap horizons from La Cotte de St Brelade (CSB, Jersey), previously interpreted as game drive debris resulting from systematic Neanderthal hunting. However, this hypothesis has never been rigorously tested....
