Archaeological Investigation of the Vaughn Site (33CU65), Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area (1986)
Archeological testing was conducted at Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area in November 1983 in conjunction with a proposed sewage leachfield near park headquarters. A multicomponent Archaic to Late Woodland archeological site (33Cu65) was located in the proposed construction area. Despite disturbance from recent historic land use practices, the site exhibits considerable contextural integrity. Subsurface testing exposed 10 distinct prehistoric features and an extensive midden deposit....

An Archaeological Synthesis of Wells in Delaware: Alternative Mitigation for the Polk Tenant Site (2016)
Versar gathered information on 58 previously excavated wells from across Delaware including size, shape, depth, the methods and materials of construction, location, and date among others. Comparison of data from the sample found patterns in well depth, location, and use of material through time. The results suggest future avenues of research to explore the ways in which well construction might relate to occupant ownership status as well as the temporal evolution of farmsteads. This synthesis...

Macroecological analysis of recent Kalahari site structure (2016)
In the 1980s, Lewis Binford (1931-2011) started an analysis of hunter-gatherer site structure that was later put on hold in order to organize ethnographic and environmental data to use in the analysis (Binford 2001). Although the frames of reference were constructed, Binford never completed his analysis of site structure. This poster represents an initial attempt to realize Binford’s vision of a controlled analysis of site structure at a large regional scale using data he organized for this...
Martu Ethnoarchaeology: Foraging, Site Structure and the Scales of Constraint on Human Behavior (2015)
In his watershed 1995 publication, O’Connell outlined the utility of approaching ethnoarchaeology through a general theory of behavior by noting the disparity between studies examining faunal remains and those attempting to explain site structure. While the former was finding great success by drawing on models from behavioral ecology, the later was stagnant and lacking a general theory of behavior. Drawing on ethnoarchaeological data collected with Martu Aboriginal foragers, we highlight a...
One Hundred Years of Archaeology at La Ciudad de Los Hornos (1990)
When the Salt River Project (SRP) decided to build the Lassen Substation (LSS) along the Western Canal just east of Priest Drive in Tempe, they determined to recover the significant archaeological resources that would otherwise be impacted. Thus a 2-ac parcel of the Hohokam village site known as La Ciudad de Los Hornos was excavated in 1988 by Archaeological Consulting Services (ACS); 195 cultural features were recorded. SRP also contracted with the present authors to write an overview of...
Ongoing Excavations at Big Village (42EM2861) in Range Creek Canyon, Utah (2024)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2024: Individual Abstracts" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Excavations were conducted from 2007 to 2013 by the University of Utah at Big Village (42EM2861) in Range Creek Canyon, Utah, to explore questions related to Fremont residential site structure and adaptations, primarily by exploring the relationships between surface features and subsurface features and artifact assemblages. Additional excavations performed...

Settlement Structure at La Villa: A Preclassic Hohokam Village (2015)
For roughly 400 years after La Villa was founded, around A.D. 500, the village would have been one of the largest in the Phoenix Basin, rivaling, perhaps, the great centers of Snaketown and Grewe on the Middle Gila River. Recent excavations at the site by Desert Archaeology Inc. combined with a series of previous investigations provide intriguing new information about the organization of settlement at Hohokam villages. The work at La Villa has resulted in the identification of two large plazas...

Trarsh or Treasure? A Critical Analysis of Hell Gap Zooarchaeology (2016)
Over the past century archaeologists have treated faunal remains differentially:either discarding all bones as unimportant, selectively collecting the informative ones, or treasuring all for eternity and future research. Studies at the stratified Paleoindian Hell Gap site in southeastern Wyoming included several of these treatment options. Our presentation investigates the different treatment of bones at Hell Gap over more than 60 years (1960-2015) of site studies. Such treatment is argued to...
